Well, First of all I am not going to write something new that is not available on web but would be sharing my experience with what is available on web and how did that help me in promoting my site. I consider myself newbie in this field so probably the best place for me was to start with google and find some good articles so I started my quest with the basic site promotion which was coming to me for free.

First thing to do is to optimize your site to rank high on search engines. Here are must-dos.
1. Always write a Page Title

2. Write a DESCRIPTION and KEYWORDS Metatag

There is a limit of maximum characters (255) and only first few characters are visible on search engines. KEYWORDS meta tag is no longer being used by Google for ranking but Yahoo uses it so make a habit of writing both.

3. Use Header Tags H1, H2, H3
Why? because Search Engines give more importance to words that come in Header Tags. That is a hint for them for the rest of the content in the page. Even if you are going to define your custom CSS (stylesheet) use H1, H2 tags and redefine them. Don't use other names.
I checked HTML view of templates on Google's blogger site all of them define these tags and don't use any custom name. A very good hint at least to work on Google.

4. First Paragraph of HTML body text should contain important keywords. This is another hint for Search Engines for importance of words.

5. Hyperlink important keywords and keyphrases. Another hint to Search Engines.

6. Avoid using Frames in HTML. Search Engines find it hard to find other pages from the content page.

7. Sumit URLs to Search Engines
